Pengaruh Internet Addiction terhadap Anxiety pada Mahasiswa Universitas Sumatera Utara

ABSTRACT
The massive use of the internet among university students brings both positive and negative impacts, one of which is internet addiction that may affect mental health, including anxiety disorders. University students are a vulnerable group due to high academic demands and social pressures. This study aims to determine the effect of internet addiction on anxiety levels among students at Universitas Sumatera Utara. This research applied a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional study design. A total of 269 students were selected using two-stage cluster random sampling from five faculties. The instruments used were the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) to measure internet addiction and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) to assess anxiety levels. Data were analyzed using a simple linear regression test with the assistance of SPSS version 26. The results showed a significant effect of internet addiction on anxiety (p = 0.000; t count = 10.588 > t table = 1.65251), with a coefficient of determination of 29.6%. This means that 29.6% of the variation in anxiety levels among students is influenced by internet addiction. These findings highlight the importance of responsible internet use and the need for digital literacy and mental health promotion among students to reduce the risk of psychological disorders. Educational institutions are expected to provide preventive and curative interventions to address this issue.

ABSTRAK
Penggunaan internet yang masif di kalangan mahasiswa membawa dampak positif dan negatif, salah satunya adalah internet addiction yang berpotensi memengaruhi kesehatan mental, termasuk gangguan kecemasan (anxiety). Mahasiswa merupakan kelompok yang rentan terhadap kondisi ini karena tingginya tuntutan akademik dan tekanan sosial. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh internet addiction terhadap tingkat anxiety pada mahasiswa Universitas Sumatera Utara. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain studi cross-sectional. Jumlah sampel sebanyak 269 mahasiswa yang dipilih melalui teknik two stage cluster random sampling dari lima fakultas. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah kuesioner Internet Addiction Test (IAT) untuk mengukur tingkat adiksi internet dan Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) untuk mengukur tingkat kecemasan. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji regresi linear sederhana dengan bantuan aplikasi SPSS versi 26. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan antara internet addiction terhadap anxiety (p = 0,000; t hitung = 10,588 > t tabel = 1,65251), dengan nilai koefisien determinasi sebesar 29,6%. Artinya, 29,6% variasi kecemasan pada mahasiswa dipengaruhi oleh tingkat adiksi internet. Temuan ini menegaskan pentingnya penggunaan internet yang bijak serta perlunya edukasi digital dan promosi kesehatan mental bagi mahasiswa untuk mengurangi risiko gangguan psikologis. Institusi pendidikan diharapkan dapat memberikan intervensi preventif dan kuratif terkait permasalahan ini.
