Abstract

Background: In general, the role of the mother in family life is to be responsible for taking care of the family. Mother has to handle all aspects of household management, including childcare, money management, food preparation, etc. Requires mental readiness to carry out its role which has the potential to cause depression.

Purpose: To identify factors correlated with depression symptoms among women in early married.

Method: Using a stratified random sampling procedure, 488 participants were selected for the interview and questionnaire in this cross-sectional study. Married women experience pressure because of the condition of their marriage, especially those who marry at a young age. The dependent variable, depression, was divided into two groups: the group with depressive symptoms with a score range of >60, and the group without depressive symptoms with a score range of 0 to 60. The fourteen independent variables were age of marriage, religion, education, ethnicity, area of residence in Bengkulu Province, occupation, place of residence, household income per month, poor living conditions, social influence on depression, family influence on depression, and stress. This study also includes three types of tests: univariate, logistic regression, and multiple logistic regression. Logistic regression and multiple logistic regression were used as data analysis to find the relationship between the independent factors and the dependent variable.

Results: The prevalence of depression was 77.87% (95% CI: 73.95-81.34). The factors that are significantly related to depression are; < 18 years (AOR = 6.19; 95% CI: 2.98 - 12.88), household income < Rp. 122.72.000 (OR = 7.01; 95% CI: 3.62 - 13.57), poor living conditions (OR = 2.16; 95% CI: 1.11 - 4.18), have a community influence on depression (OR = 3.68; 95% CI: 1.91 - 7.06) and experience stress (OR = 9.85; 95% CI: 5.24 - 18.24).

Conclusion: Marriage age, household income, poor living conditions, community depression, and stress are all associated with depression among married women in Bengkulu Province.
