Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is discomfort in the form of pain during menstruation. Dysmenorrhea that occurs in adolescents if not treated will have an impact on daily activity patterns, not attending school or skipping college, decreased productivity, and decreased concentration and can then lead to decreased achievement. Acupressure therapy is therapy on acupuncture points without using needles but with a massage using fingers. Acupressure therapy can be done by massaging the body's meridian points.

Purpose: To determine the Effect of acupressure therapy on the pain intensity of dysmenorrhea

Method: Quasi-experimental research with a pretest-posttest design with a control group design. The intervention group was given acupressure therapy on SP 6 acupoint, while the control group was not given only education about acupressure therapy after that the pain scale examination (post-test), the number of respondents was 36 students, the test used was a nonparametric test with a dependent test using Wilcoxon test and for independent using Mann-Whitney U.

Results: The average decrease in the dysmenorrhoea pain scale from the pre-therapy pain scale was 5.72 to a pain scale of 2.67 in the intervention group and in the control group from a pain scale of 4.50 to a pain scale of 3.94. Significant difference in the average dysmenorrhea pain scale in the intervention group p-value 0.001 (< 0.05), control group p-value 0.084 (> 0.05). The results of this study indicate that acupressure therapy given at the SP6 meridian point is proven to be effective in reducing dysmenorrhoea pain.

Conclusion: Acupressure therapy research conducted at the SP6 point for 20 minutes for 2 consecutive months was proven to be effective in reducing dysmenorrhea pain. Acupressure therapy is a therapy that has been proven effective if it is done regularly and long-term.
