ABSTRACT

Schizophrenia is a mental condition characterized by changes in thinking, emotions, and behavior that result in individuals experiencing a disconnection from reality. The incidence of schizophrenia cases in the Sindang Jaya Primary Health Care Area is quite high, with a low level of treatment adherence. Appropriate and consistent intervention efforts can enhance the knowledge of patients and their families, thus improving treatment compliance. Education on schizophrenia and its management using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle approach was provided to 25 community members. The objective of this activity was to increase awareness and knowledge among the community about the signs and symptoms, causes, and management of schizophrenia. Education about schizophrenia also plays a crucial role in reducing the stigma often associated with this condition. Out of the 25 participants, 22 individuals (88%) showed an improvement in their knowledge of schizophrenia. Therefore, the provision of accurate information can help the community better understand and empathize with the fact that schizophrenia is a medical condition that requires treatment and support. A better understanding of schizophrenia encourages active community involvement in supporting individuals with this condition. The community can assist in identifying early signs of schizophrenia in themselves or others and encourage affected individuals to seek professional help. Social support from the community is highly beneficial for individuals with schizophrenia in addressing the challenges they face in their daily lives. Education about schizophrenia serves as a critical foundation for reducing stigma, enhancing understanding, creating a more inclusive environment for individuals with schizophrenia, and improving treatment adherence, thereby enabling individuals with schizophrenia to optimize their daily functioning.
