ABSTRACT

Anemia and obesity remain prevalent nutritional problems among young adults and may occur simultaneously as a manifestation of the double burden of malnutrition at the individual level. In Indonesia, studies examining the coexistence of anemia and obesity among female university students, particularly based on faculty background, remain limited, despite the fact that differences in academic disciplines may influence lifestyle, health literacy, and behaviors related to these conditions. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of anemia, obesity, and their coexistence, as well as to analyze the association between faculty groups (health and non-health) and the coexistence of anemia and obesity among female students at University X in Indonesia. This study employed a cross-sectional design using secondary data obtained from health examinations of first-year female students at University X in 2025. A total of 1,196 students were included in the final analysis. Data analysis comprised univariate analysis to describe respondent characteristics and variable distributions, and bivariate analysis using the Chi-square test to assess the association between faculty groups and the coexistence of anemia and obesity, followed by post hoc analysis using Tukey-adjusted pairwise comparisons. The results showed that the prevalence of anemia was 14.3%, while obesity prevalence reached 47.2%. The coexistence of anemia and obesity as a manifestation of the individual-level double burden of malnutrition was identified in 4.9% of participants. Bivariate analysis indicated no statistically significant association between faculty groups (health and non-health) and the coexistence of anemia and obesity (p = 0.958). In conclusion, anemia, obesity, and their coexistence remain prevalent among female students at University X. However, academic faculty background was not associated with differences in the occurrence of the individual-level double burden of malnutrition.
