ABSTRACT

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral nerve compression disorder, occurring predominantly in older women. Conventional therapies carry significant risks in elderly patients who often refuse surgical intervention. This study aimed to document and evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture care in reducing numbness, pain, and hand weakness, as well as improving sleep quality and hand functional capacity in a CTS patient. A single descriptive case study was conducted at Griya Sehat Shen Acupuncture, Surakarta, involving one female patient aged 71 years with right-hand unilateral CTS (February 1–28, 2026; 6 treatment sessions, twice weekly). The acupuncture protocol consisted of 11 acupoints: PC 7, EX-UE-9, BL 17, BL 18, BL 20, HT 7, LU 9, LI 4, LI 11, SP 10, and ST 36, tailored to the TCM pattern of blood deficiency failing to nourish tendons and meridians. Ethical clearance was obtained from KEPK ITSK RS dr. Soepraoen Malang (No. KEPK-EC/509/II/2026). The patient showed clinically significant improvement: pain reduced 100% (VAS 10/10 to 0/10), numbness reduced 80% (VAS 10/10 to 2/10), sleep quality improved 100% (VAS 6/10 to 0/10), and grip strength recovered from Grade 4/5 to Grade 5/5. No serious adverse effects were recorded. Acupuncture using a TCM-based comprehensive protocol is effective, safe, and acceptable in managing CTS in elderly patients as a non-surgical alternative

Soepraoen Malang (No. KEPK-EC/509/II/2026).
