ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a rapidly growing chronic disease and a major global health challenge, particularly in middle‑income countries such as Indonesia, which requires optimal management through improved patient skills in using insulin pens. Video‑based education has emerged as an innovative approach that can overcome the limitations of conventional education and has the potential to enhance patients’ technical skills in insulin injection as well as glycemic control. This study is a literature review using a systematic review approach guided by the PRISMA 2020 statement, with article searches conducted in PubMed, Elsevier, ResearchGate, Medknow, Sage Publication, MDPI, and Google Scholar for the years 2020–2025, including interventional studies that evaluated video‑based education on insulin pen injection skills and or blood glucose and HbA1c levels among patients with diabetes mellitus. Of the 25 articles initially identified, 12 met the inclusion criteria and were further analyzed, demonstrating that video‑based education consistently improves knowledge and technical skills in insulin pen injection and, in several studies, contributes to reductions in fasting blood glucose, two‑hour postprandial glucose, and HbA1c. This literature review concludes that video‑based education is an effective strategy to support diabetes mellitus management by enhancing insulin pen use skills and improving glycemic control, and is therefore recommended to be integrated systematically into patient education programs in healthcare facilities such as X Hospital Bekasi.
