ABSTRACT

Taking care of a newborn is the biggest challenge in a woman's life during the reproductive age. Many women experience difficulties in coping with this significant life change. Although most women have adequate resilience to the negative impacts of stress, many also experience psychological problems that disrupt their ability to care for a newborn. Postpartum depression is a common and serious mental health condition that affects up to 50-70% of women in Indonesia after giving birth. The pathophysiology of postpartum depression is complex and involves many factors, including hormonal changes, genetic predisposition, and psychosocial stressors. Treatment for this condition usually involves a combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are the first-line pharmacotherapy choice. Psychotherapy options include cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. Despite progress in developing new treatments, there are still challenges in diagnosis and treatment, including stigma and a lack of access to care. Increased screening and education efforts are needed to raise awareness and reduce the incidence of postpartum depression. This literature review discusses the prevention and management of postpartum depression. This research is a literature review. In conclusion, the best treatment for postpartum depression involves a holistic and integrated approach, which includes various methods of prevention and management, and involves the support of partners and health professionals.
