ABSTRACT
The handwashing with soap (HWWS) educational intervention was implemented at SD Negeri 188 Palembang to enhance elementary school students’ knowledge and practical skills in proper hand hygiene. The program applied structured health education methods, including audio-visual presentations, live demonstrations, and guided practice. This intervention aimed to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases associated with poor hand hygiene behavior. Evaluation using pre-test and post-test assessments showed a measurable improvement in students’ knowledge, with a mean post-test score increase of 0.47 points compared to the pre-test. These findings indicate that structured HWWS education effectively improves hand hygiene awareness among elementary school students and supports school-based health promotion programs as a sustainable community health intervention model. It is essential for teachers and school authorities to integrate handwashing hygiene habits into daily routines, such as before meals.
