ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease with an increasing prevalence and a risk of various complications, including foot ulcers. The importance of foot care in preventing such complications is well-established, yet patient compliance remains influenced by a variety of psychosocial factors, including subjective norms. The objective of this study is to provide the description of subjective norms of diabetes mellitus patients related to foot care behaviour in the working area of the Babakan Sari Community Health Centre. This study used a quantitative, descriptive design with a sample of 79 diabetes mellitus patients, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire based on the modified Theory of Planned Behavior, and analysed descriptively. The results indicated that the majority of respondents (70.9%) exhibited poor subjective norms regarding foot care behavior. This finding suggests that individuals with diabetes may not perceive sufficient social support or normative pressure from their immediate environment, including family, peers, and health professionals, to engage in regular foot care practices. The subjective norms of people with diabetes mellitus regarding foot care remain relatively low. These findings emphasise the importance of strengthening social support and the role of the surrounding environment in improving foot care behaviour at primary healthcare level.
