ABSTRACT

Background Operating room nurses work in a high-pressure environment characterized by complex procedures, time demands, and significant patient safety risks. These conditions may lead to work stress that can affect nurses’ productivity. Therefore, effective stress management strategies are required to maintain performance and perioperative service quality. Objective,This study aimed to explore in depth the work stress management strategies of nurses in improving productivity in the Operating Room Unit of Siloam Hospital Manado. Methods, This study employed a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. Four informants were selected purposively, consisting of a recovery nurse, operating assistant nurse, instrument nurse, and in-charge nurse. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results,Four major themes emerged: (1) experiences of work stress caused by high workload, time pressure, and patient safety responsibilities; (2) the impact of stress on productivity including decreased concentration, physical fatigue, and disrupted team performance; (3) individual stress management strategies through emotional, social, spiritual, and problem-focused coping; and (4) organizational support through supportive leadership, team briefings, and task distribution. Work stress among operating room nurses is a multidimensional phenomenon affecting work productivity. Adaptive coping strategies and organizational support play crucial roles in managing stress and maintaining nurses’ performance.
