ABSTRACT

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a common respiratory system disorder experienced by neonates. One of the risk factors for RDS is if the mother has gestational diabetes mellitus (DMG) during pregnancy. Even so, the research data currently available in this regard is still contradictory. This study is intended to provide a description of the characteristics of variables related to the incidence of RDS and DMG so that it is expected to bridge the gap.  This study is an observational descriptive study with a cross-sectional study design and uses the medical records of patients of Hospital X Jakarta as a source of research data. From the results of the study, the majority of neonates who experienced RDS were female (63.6%), full-term birth age (84.1%), and normal birth weight (81.8%). As many as 4.5% of neonates who experience RDS are born to mothers who experience DMG during their pregnancy. The characteristics of neonates who experience RDS, the characteristics of neonates who experience RDS born to mothers with DMG, and the characteristics of mothers with DMG who gave birth to neonates with RDS at Hospital X Jakarta in 2016-2020 can be known, but the number of neonates who experienced RDS, and the number of pregnant women who experienced DMG in the hospital of the study site in 2016-2020 cannot be known for sure
