ABSTRACT

Plastic waste is non-biodegradable and can be recycled through pyrolysis to obtain fuel or chemicals. The aim of this Community Service activity is to provide training to the officer of the Sirnajaya Waste Bank on using pyrolysis equipment to process plastic waste into fuel. The implementation of the activity began with an inspection of the condition and type of waste around the Sirnajaya Waste Bank. The activity continued with technical training on the use of pyrolysis equipment. The technical training was attended by 16 officer of Sirnajaya Waste Bank. The layered plastic packaging waste used comes from instant noodle packaging. In this technical training, activity participants are given a Preliminary Test and a Final Test to determine the participant's knowledge regarding the basic concepts of pyrolysis, types of plastic, pyrolysis equipment, and the results that can be obtained from pyrolysis. In this training, participants could directly observe and practice pyrolysis technology using instant noodle packaging waste. The pyrolysis results from instant noodle packaging waste are in the form of a liquid fraction, which has a Gross Calorific Value of 18,539 BTU/lb and has the potential to be used as fuel. The Preliminary Test and Final Tests showed increased training participants' knowledge regarding the basic concepts and applications of pyrolysis in processing plastic waste. Before the training, the participants' knowledge about pyrolysis and its applications averaged 2.5 %, and after the training, the average increased to 98.8 %. The success of this activity can be seen from the advanced knowledge of Sirnajaya Waste Bank managers regarding basic concepts, simple techniques, types of plastic that can be processed, and the final results of pyrolysis of plastic waste. It is hoped that the management of the Sirnajaya Waste Bank can utilize the pyrolysis equipment to reduce plastic waste and use it to create alternative fuels.
