ABSTRACT
Chronic pain is a common complaint among the elderly, significantly impacting their quality of life and healthcare costs. Pharmacological treatments for chronic pain often have high side effects in the elderly, whereas non-pharmacological approaches such as physical therapy, relaxation techniques, and psychological interventions are safer and more effective. Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) has been proven to reduce acute and chronic pain, as well as anxiety and depression, by improving sleep quality and self-efficacy. The aim of this community service activity is to train elderly individuals experiencing pain to develop skills in managing joint pain through Progressive Muscle Relaxation therapy. The implementation of the community service program involves preparation, execution, and evaluation of progressive muscle relaxation therapy for the elderly, including discussions on the location of implementation, preparation of modules, music, and measurement instruments, as well as the execution of therapy and pain scale measurement before and after therapy. Evaluation is conducted by measuring changes in pain scale after therapy. The training in progressive muscle relaxation therapy was attended by 30 elderly participants, predominantly female, working as farmers, and aged over 50 years. Before therapy, the majority of respondents experienced joint pain in the moderate category (77%). After 30 minutes of therapy, the pain scale significantly decreased, with an increase in the number of respondents experiencing mild pain from 2 to 10. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation therapy in reducing joint pain in the elderly. The application of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) therapy has been proven effective in reducing the level of joint pain in the elderly, showing a significant decrease from severe to moderate and mild pain. It is recommended that PMR therapy be integrated into joint pain management programs in various healthcare facilities as a routine part of rehabilitation programs for elderly individuals with chronic joint pain.
