ABSTRACT
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a global health problem characterized by hyperglycemia, which can lead to chronic complications and decreased quality of life. In Indonesia, the increasing number of DM cases highlights the urgency of public education for the prevention and management of the disease. Health education plays a crucial role in improving self-care behaviors and glycemic control. The objective of this community service activity was to provide education aimed at increasing public knowledge about DM in the working area of the Sungai Tabuk Health Center. The activity took place at the Village Office Hall of Abumbun Jaya, Sungai Tabuk, on October 13, 2025, involving 50 participants who were either diagnosed with DM or at high risk of developing the disease. The program included blood pressure measurements, random blood glucose tests, and an initial assessment of participants’ knowledge (pretest) using a questionnaire. This was followed by a health education session delivered through leaflet and audio-visual media using a lecture method, and subsequently a posttest to reassess participants’ knowledge levels. The pretest results showed that most participants had poor (22%) and less satisfactory (62%) levels of knowledge. However, posttest results revealed an improvement, with 48% showing fair and 28% showing good levels of knowledge. The Marginal Homogeneity Test produced a p-value of 0.000, indicating a significant effect of the educational intervention on the participants’ knowledge levels.Health education using leaflet and audio-visual media significantly improved public knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus in the working area of the Sungai Tabuk Health Center. It is expected that the community will be able to recognize risk factors, seek early treatment, and adopt healthier lifestyles to control the risk of developing Diabetes Mellitus.
