ABSTRACT

Anemia among adolescent girls remains a significant public health problem that affects learning concentration, physical fitness, and future health outcomes. Effective prevention efforts are needed through early detection and structured health education in school settings. This community service activity aimed to conduct hemoglobin (Hb) screening and to improve the knowledge and awareness of adolescent girls regarding anemia prevention at SMP 04 in the working area of Puskesmas Jalan Gedang, Bengkulu City. The activity was carried out in January 2026 targeting adolescent girls aged 11–15 years. The method consisted of preparation, implementation of Hb screening on January 14–15, 2026, and a two-day educational intervention conducted on January 19–20, 2026. The educational materials covered the pathophysiology of anemia, the impact of menstruation lasting more than seven days, personal hygiene, balanced nutrition with high iron intake, iron supplementation (iron tablets), the Anemia Prevention Movement (GECA), and hygiene and healthy lifestyle practices. The results showed that 56% of participants had mild anemia, 10.8% moderate anemia, and 7% severe anemia. There was also an improvement in participants’ knowledge after the intervention, indicated by active participation during discussions and demonstrations, as well as an increase in pre-test and post-test scores (84.95 to 93.95). This activity demonstrates that the combination of screening and interactive school-based education can serve as an effective community service model in supporting sustainable anemia prevention among adolescent girls.
