ABSTRACT

Urinary incontinence is a common health problem among older adults caused by a decline in urinary system function and weakness of the pelvic floor muscles. This condition may lead to physical, psychological, and social consequences, ultimately reducing the quality of life of older adults. Data from the local community health center indicated that approximately 30% of older adults in Debong Kulon Village, Tegal City, experienced urinary incontinence. Limited knowledge regarding urological health and pelvic floor muscle exercises has contributed to the inadequate management of this condition.  This community service program aimed to empower older adults through urological health education and Kegel exercise training to improve their knowledge, skills, and ability to independently implement urinary incontinence prevention measures. The program was conducted through urological health education, Kegel exercise training, practical assistance, and follow-up screening. A total of 30 older adults in Debong Kulon Village, Tegal City, participated in the activity. Knowledge was evaluated using pre-test and post-test questionnaires, while participants’ Kegel exercise skills were assessed through direct observation and follow-up screening after the intervention. The results showed an improvement in participants' knowledge after the intervention. The proportion of participants with good knowledge increased from 3.3% during the pre-test to 93% during the post-test, while those with poor knowledge decreased from 80% to 0%. Follow-up screening results revealed that all participants (100%) were able to correctly perform Kegel exercises and reported benefits such as reduced urinary frequency compared to before the intervention. Urological health education combined with Kegel exercise training and follow-up screening effectively improved older adults’ knowledge of urinary incontinence and enhanced their ability to perform Kegel exercises independently. This program has the potential to serve as a promotive and preventive strategy for urinary incontinence prevention and quality-of-life improvement among older adults in the community.
