Abstract

Developing countries, including Indonesia, have high suicide rates with lots of cases happening there. Gunung Kidul Regency in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY) has the highest suicidal rate in Indonesia. Pulung Gantung becomes the main impact of the suicidal cases in Gunung Kidul. The elderly, who dominate this phenomenon, feel lonely and find it difficult to adapt to the aging process due to the physiological changes experienced. Art therapy is known as the alternative to lower the suicidal rate which is caused by the loneliness the elderly feel. This literature study research aims to learn the use of art therapy for elderly people who experience loneliness and hopelessness. Ten articles about art therapy have been analyzed and it can be stated that this method can lower the depression and loneliness rate. Art therapy can also be used to express some expressions, namely anger, fear of rejection, anxiety, and low self-esteem. This research provides implications for future researchers who are interested in expanding this topic, local health services, and the government to find the preeminent solutions for the depressed and lonely elderly.
