Abstract

Problematic pornography use (PPU) refers to excessive consumption of pornography that negatively impacts the psychosocial functioning of adolescents. Families and parents play a crucial role in preventing problematic pornography use among this population. Through a systematic literature review, this study examines the role of family functions and parental involvement in preventing PPU in adolescents. The review findings indicate that positive family functioning, open communication, parenting styles, and sexual education emphasizing privacy consistently reduce the risk of PPU in adolescents. Conversely, family conflicts, lack of familial support, and excessive supervision increase adolescents’ vulnerability to PPU. This study serves as a reference for developing comprehensive, family-based sexual education programs that are sensitive to adolescents’ needs, thereby enhancing the long-term effectiveness of PPU prevention. Future research may explore familial and parental factors within specific cultural contexts related to strategies and interventions for pornography prevention
