ABSTRACT
Women who use drugs often face dual stigma related to their identity as both women and substance users. This stigma is closely linked to patriarchal culture and ongoing gender discrimination. As a result, stigma can hinder the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs and increase the risk of relapse. This article aims to understand substance abuse among women in relation to mental health and social responses using the theoretical frameworks of Ecological Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Control Theory. A systematic literature review was conducted using Harzing’s Publish or Perish and VOSViewer. Findings indicate that research on stigma, depression, and substance use among women remains limited. Patriarchal norms and strong social stigma further restrict women’s access to healthcare and support. By applying social control and social cognitive theories, along with Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory, this article offers a comprehensive framework to understand individual and environmental factors influencing substance abuse behavior among women.
