Abstract
Social relationship quality is a crucial aspect of adolescents’ psychosocial development, as it plays an important role in identity formation and the ability to establish healthy interpersonal relationships. Adolescents’ social relationship quality may be influenced by Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and phubbing behavior, which refers to the tendency to ignore face-to-face interactions due to excessive smartphone use. This study aimed to examine the relationship between FoMO and social relationship quality among late adolescents in Surabaya, Indonesia, and to investigate the mediating role of phubbing in this relationship. This investigation employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected from 381 adolescents aged 15–19 years using the FoMO Scale, the Quality of Relationships Inventory, and the Generic Scale of Phubbing. Data analysis was conducted using mediation analysis with PROCESS Macro Model 4. The outcomes indicated that FoMO did not have a statistically significant direct effect on social relationship quality. However, FoMO had a significant positive effect on phubbing, and phubbing had a significant negative effect on social relationship quality. Furthermore, mediation analysis revealed that phubbing significantly mediated the relationship between FoMO and social relationship quality. These findings extend the theoretical understanding of the psychological mechanisms linking FoMO and adolescents’ social relationship quality and provide practical implications for the development of digital literacy programs and interventions aimed at improving adolescents’ interpersonal relationships.
